On the afternoon of March 15, Otmar Loffeld, director of the Research Center of Sensor Systems (ZESS) at the University of Siegen in Germany, was appointed as visiting professor of TYUT. The appointment ceremony was held in meeting room 324 of the Office Building at Yingxi Campus. Lu Jianming, Deputy Director General of the Organization Department of Shanxi Provincial Party Committee and Director General of Shanxi Provincial Department of Human Resources and Social Security; Zhang Xinwei, Director of Talent Administration Division of the Organization Department of Shanxi Provincial Party Committee; Wu Yucheng, Party Committee Secretary of TYUT; and Liang Weiguo, Vice President of TYUT, attended the ceremony. The heads of the College of Physics and Optoelectronic Engineering and the Key Laboratory of New Sensors and Intelligent Control of Ministry of Education of TYUT participated in the event as well.
Wu Yucheng awarded the letter of appointment to Professor Loffeld. Liang Weiguo hosted the appointment ceremony.
On behalf of TYUT, Wu Yucheng extended a warm welcome to Professor Loffeld, and affirmed fully his academic achievements. Wu Yucheng then introduced the basic information of TYUT to Professor Loffeld, especially its progress in sensor research. He said that the joining of Profession Loffeld in TYUT would greatly help promote the overall research strength of the physics and optoelectronic engineering of TYUT and set an example for other basic science disciplines of TYUT to carry out international research cooperation. And TYUT would proactively participate in professor Loffeld’s research projects and undertake the corresponding work. He hoped that the two sides could cooperate with each other in talent exchange, student training and research cooperation so as to strengthen each other and achieve win-win and fruitful results.
In his acceptance speech, Professor Loffeld said that it was an honor to be appointed as visiting professor of TYUT, and he was fully confident in cooperating with College of Physical and Optoelectronic Engineering and making achievements in the research and application of sensors.
Lu Jianming extended a warm welcome to Professor Loffeld on his first visit to Shanxi. He introduced the basic situation of Shanxi to Professor Loffeld and pointed out that Shanxi Province had been going global and introducing advanced technologies and high-level talents from foreign countries in recent years. And Shanxi has kept opening up and participated in international exchanges and cooperation, especially the exchange of talents, and achieved remarkable results. TYUT is one of the oldest universities in Shanxi which have been prioritized by the Provincial Government for support. TYUT is now vigorously gathering talents, improving its educational quality, and working towards the “double first-class” construction goals. He believed that the joining of Professor Loffeld would assist TYUT in discipline construction, scientific research, and personnel training. He hoped that the cooperation between the two sides would be pleasant and fruitful. And the Organization Department of Shanxi Provincial Party Committee and Shanxi Provincial Department of Human Resources and Social Security would provide convenience and necessary support for the cooperation between the two parties.
During the visit, Professor Loffeld made an academic report entitled “Make Sensing Smart: Smart data rather than big data -- the Center for Sensor Systems (ZESS)”, and had extensive academic exchanges with teachers and students.
Otmar Loffeld received the Diploma degree in electrical engineering from the Technical University of Aachen in 1982, the Eng. Dr. degree, and the ‘habilitation’ in the field of digital signal processing and estimation theory in 1986, and 1989, respectively, both from the University of Siegen. In 1991 he was appointed as a professor for digital signal processing and estimation theory at the University of Siegen. He is author of two textbooks on estimation theory. In 1995 Prof. Dr. Loffeld became a member of the Center for Sensor Systems (ZESS) which is a central scientific research establishment at the University of Siegen. Since 2005 he is the Chairman of that Center. In 1999 he became Principal Investigator (PI) on Baseline Estimation for the X-Band part of the Shuttle Radar Topography Mission (SRTM) where ZESS contributed to DLR’s baseline calibration algorithms. Prof. Loffeld is PI for interferometric techniques in the German TerraSAR-X mission, and, together with Prof. Ender from FGAN, he is one the PI’s for a bistatic spaceborne airborne experiment, where TerraSAR-X will serve as the bistatic illuminator while FGAN’s PAMIR system mounted on a Transall airplane will be used as a bistatic receiver. Pof. Loffeld is a member of the ITG/VDE and Senior Member of the IEEE/GRSS.
