On the morning of July 15, President Huang Qingxue met with a delegation of four people from the Mona Campus of the University of the West Indies (UWI) in Jamaica, which was led by its Principal Dale Webber. He awarded the appointment letter of honorary professor to Principal Webber and the appointment letter of visiting professor to Dr. Courtney A. Hogarth, the Jamaican director of the Confucius Institute. Vice President Lv Yongkang hosted the appointment ceremony, and the heads of the International Cooperation Division, Confucius Institute Office, Personnel Division and College of Art attended the ceremony.
Before the start of the appointment ceremony, a publicity video of TYUT was played, presenting TYUT’s teaching, scientific research and international cooperation to the foreign guests. Afterwards, Huang Qingxue delivered a speech. He introduced briefly to the foreign guests TYUT’s features, advantages and future goals. He pointed out that TYUT had cooperated closely and formed lasting friendship with more than 130 high-level universities in the world; and the cooperation between TYUT and UWI had already lasted for ten years. He expected the two sides to achieve more substantial results on a higher and broader level. Principal Webber, he added, is an expert in the field of marine biology, and his appointment as an honorary professor to TYUT will help promote cooperation between the two parties in the related fields. And Dr. Hogarth, the Jamaican director of the Confucius Institute, is a poet and artist; and his appointment as a visiting professor to TYUT will help promote the foreign exchanges and discipline construction of the College of Art of TYUT.
In the subsequent appointment ceremony, Huang Qingxue presented the letters of appointment to Principal Webber and Dr. Hogarth and took photos with them.
Principal Webber expressed his heartfelt thanks to TYUT for awarding him the honor. He said that TYUT is a comprehensive university with obvious advantages in engineering, and its mechanical engineering, in particular, enjoys a profound educational culture and a high level of scientific research. UWI has just established its School of Mechanical Engineering and needs urgently help and support from TYUT. He was looking forward to conducting further cooperation with TYUT and receiving delegations from TYUT to visit UWI, participate in the Celebration of the10th Anniversary of the Confucius Institute, the inauguration of the new Confucius Institute building and the joint conference of Confucius Institutes in the Caribbean region in the future. Dr. Hogarth said that he would proactively participate in the exchanges between the two sides and stay in close touch with the College of Art of TYUT.
